1) The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) compiled data for life expectancy at birth and the
number of acute care beds per 1000 population in several countries.

2) No data was available for Greece, Iceland, or New Zealand.

3) An immediate standout is Japan, with the longest life expectancy at nearly 82 years, also has the highest number of acute
care beds at about 8.5 per 1000 population.

4) Sweden, Spain, Australia, and Switzerland all have life expectancies above 80 years, yet less than half the acute care beds
of Japan, between 2 and 4 per 1000 population.

5) A large grouping of data shows many countries with between 2 and 4 beds per 1000 population and life expectancies
between 77 and 81 years.

6) Another area of interest is that Austria and Germany have nearly double (about 6.5) the beds per 1000 as other European
nations (about 2.5 to 4), but essentially the same life expectancy of about 79 years.

7) Mexico has the lowest number of acute care beds of the countries reviewed at about 1 per 1000 population, with life
expectancy around 75 years.

8) Turkey has the lowest life expectancy of the countries reviewed at about 71 years, with about 2.3 acute care beds per 1000
population.
