
So What?
1) The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) compiled data for deaths attributed to diabetes per
100,000 population over time. Data from selected countries has been charted.
2) Data for Belgium after 1997 and the UK in 2000 was not collected.
3) The broad range of diabetes death rates one wonder if the method of classifying a diabetes-caused death is the same in all
countries.
4) Belgium shows a widely varying diabetes death rate over a thirty year period, with a peak at 32 per 100,000 population and
dropping to 10 per 100,000 by 1992.
5) Germany shows a similar variability, peaking at 30 per 100,000 in 1973 and dropping to 12 per 100,000 in 1988, only to rise
back to 20 per 100,000 in 1993.
6) The UK diabetes death rate has remained consistently between 7 and 10 per 100,000 population over the 1960 to 2002 time
period.
7) In the US, diabetes death rates were as high as 22 per 100,000 in 1968, dropping to 14 per 100,000 in 1982, then rising
back to 21 per 100,000 by 1999.
