U.S. Dept of Agriculture Budget Per Farm Employee
So What?

1) In this chart, the U.S. Department of Agriculture budget has been corrected for inflation to indicate constant-buying power
(real) FY2000 dollar value over time, then divided by both Direct Farm Employment and Direct Farm plus Farm-Related
Employment to get the budget per farm employee.

2) Direct Farm Employment includes farm proprietors and farm workers. Data available from 1969 through 2006.

3) Farm and Farm-Related Employment includes both Direct Farm Employment and a wide variety of jobs related to farming,
like farm equipment sales staff, farm equipment mechanics, produce buyers, food inspectors, grain elevator operators, and the
like. Data available only from 1981 through 2002.

4) As the number of direct farm employees has dwindled, the USDA budget has increased dramatically per direct farm worker,
rising from about $5500 per worker in 1969 to nearly $16,000 per worker in 2006.

5) From 1981 to 2002, the USDA budget has stayed relatively constant (see
chart) and the number of Direct Farm and
Farm-Related Employees has increased steadily (see
chart), so the budget per employee has dropped steadily.
