So What?
1) NAEP stands for National Assessment of Educational Progress and is taken by most public school students in 4th, 8th, and 12
th grade as required by the U.S. Department of Education.
2) This is a measure of how well 8th grade public school students are doing relative to each other.
3) These funding numbers don't account for cost of living differences between states.
4) A slight positive correlation between state NAEP 8th grade scores and per pupil funding. That is, overall in the US, the more
spent on education, the higher the NAEP scores.
5) Dramatic difference between scores of students in Washington DC and those in New Jersey and New York with nearly the
same funding per pupil.
6) Washington DC spends 60% more per pupil than most states and has the lowest NAEP scores nationwide. DC residents may
want to ask their educators how the extra money is helping student achievement.
