So What?
1) NAEP stands for National Assessment of Educational Progress and is taken by most public school students in 4th, 8th, and 12
th grade as required by the U.S. Department of Education.

2) This is a measure of 8th grader reading proficiency in 2007 in both public and private schools, broken out by teacher reports
of their experience teaching reading, writing, or language arts in Grades 6 through 12.

3) NAEP Reading proficiency levels for 8th grade are: Basic 243, Proficient 281, Advanced 323. (See

Achievement Levels by Grade).

4) 8th graders in private school score higher on average than their counterparts in public school, regardless of teacher
experience.

5) Public school teachers continue to improve their students' scores as they gain additional experience.

6) Students of private school teachers with experience between 0 and 19 years get approximately the same reading scores.

7) Students of private school teachers get significantly better reading scores than those of less experienced teachers.
