
So What?
1) NAEP stands for National Assessment of Educational Progress and is taken by most public school students in 4th, 8th, and 12
th grade as required by the U.S. Department of Education.
2) This is a measure of 8th grader reading proficiency in from 1994 to 2007 in both public and private schools, broken out by
school reports of the percent of teachers who were absent on a typical day.
3) NAEP Reading proficiency levels for 8th grade are: Basic 243, Proficient 281, Advanced 323. (See NAEP Reading
Achievement Levels by Grade).
4) Overall, it looks like teacher absence has a less significant impact on student reading scores than student absence (See 2007
student absence graph.)
5) Notice that private schools didn't report any absences higher than 5%. Public schools reported absences to 10% and above
in 2003 and 2007.
6) One can see that regardless of the percent of teacher absent, on average, private school 8th graders have higher reading
proficiency than their counterparts in public schools.
7) Strange that in private schools in 1998, students in schools where 3-5% of teachers were absent had higher reading scores
than students in schools where 0-2% of teachers were absent.
8) Generally, it looks like student scores have improved somewhat in public schools where at higher percentage (6-10% or
higher) of teachers are absent on a typical day.
9) Generally, not much change in student reading scores for schools where teachers are present.
