So What?
1) NAEP stands for National Assessment of Educational Progress and is taken by most public school students in 4th, 8th, and 12
th grade as required by the U.S. Department of Education.

2) This is a measure of 17 year old student reading proficiency in both public and private schools, broken out by
student-reported usual hours of television and video watching on school days.

3) NAEP Reading proficiency levels for 12th grade (~17 year olds) are: Basic 265, Proficient 302, Advanced 346. (See
NAEP
Reading Achievement Levels by Grade).

4) Students reporting usually watching no TV or video per school day show general proficiency improvement to above the NAEP
Proficient level from 1984 to 1994, then steady deterioration from 1996 to 2008 to 10 points below NAEP Proficient.

5) Students reporting usually watching 6 or more hours of TV or video per school day show a sharp decline from 1984 to 1992,
then improvement in 1994 and 1996, then leveling off below the NAEP Basic level through 2008.
