So What?
1) NAEP stands for National Assessment of Educational Progress and is taken by most public school students in 4th, 8th, and 12
th grade as required by the U.S. Department of Education.

2) This is a measure of 8th grader reading proficiency in 2007 in both public and private schools, broken out by school reports
of the percent of students who are absent on an average day.

3) NAEP Reading proficiency levels for 8th grade are: Basic 243, Proficient 281, Advanced 323. (See
NAEP Reading
Achievement Levels by Grade).

4) One can see a clear relationship between reading proficiency and student absence/attendance.
