1) NAEP stands for National Assessment of Educational Progress and is taken by most public school students in 4th, 8th, and 12
th grade as required by the U.S. Department of Education.

2) This is a measure of 8th grader mathematics proficiency in both public and private schools, broken out by student reports of
number of days they were absent during the prior month.

3) NAEP Math proficiency levels for 8th grade (~age 13) are: Basic 262, Proficient 299, Advanced 333. (See
NAEP Mathematics
Achievement Levels by Grade).

4) Data from 1996 to 2008 show math proficiency improvement by students reporting 4 or fewer days absent in the prior month
and math proficiency deterioration by students reporting more than 10 days absent.
