So What?
1) The U.S. Department of Education selected data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 1984,
1994, 1996, 1999, and 2004. Nine year old students were asked about the time they spent each night on homework.
2) The vast majority of nine year olds spent less than one hour per night on homework, increasing from 41% in 1984 to 59% in
2004.
3) Fewer and fewer nine year olds don't have homework, decreasing from 35% in 1984 to 21% in 2004.
4) About the same percent (between 3% and 4%) of nine year olds didn't do their homework.
5) About the same percent (between 4% and 6%) of nine year olds spent more than two hours per night on homework.
6) Consider that the number of homework hours in this study were those reported by the students, not actually observed
independently. So this is what the students reported their homework hours were, not necessarily what they actually were.
