So What?

1) The U.S. Department of Education selected data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 1984,
1994, 1996, 1999, and 2004. Seventeen year old students who took the reading test were asked about the time they spent
each night on homework.

2) In general, for seventeen year olds, the more time spent on homework, the higher they scored in reading.

3) Seventeen year olds who didn't have any homework scored lower in reading than seventeen year olds who didn't do their
homework.

4) In 2004, seventeen years olds who spent two hours or less on homework, or didn't have homework, had reading scores that
dropped over previous years.

5) Consider that the number of homework hours in this study were those reported by the students, not actually observed
independently. So this is what the students
reported their homework hours were, not necessarily what they actually were.
