So What?

1) The U.S. Department of Education selected data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 1984,
1994, 1996, 1999, and 2004. Seventeen year old students were asked how often they read for fun.

2) Most (between 28% and 33%) of seventeen year olds report reading for fun weekly. This has stayed relatively constant over
time.

3) Generally, a decreasing number (from 31% in 1984 to 22% in 2004) of seventeen year olds report reading for fun daily.

4) Sadly, an increasing number (from 9% in 1984 to 19% in 2004) of seventeen year olds report no reading for fun.

5) Also, a less dramatic, but increasing number (from 10% in 1984 to 14% in 2004) of seventeen year olds report reading only
yearly for fun.
