1) The U.S. Department of Education selected data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 1984,
1994, 1996, 1999, and 2004. Seventeen year old students were asked about the time they spent each night on homework.
2) The vast majority of seventeen year olds reported either having no homework or spending less than two hours per night on
homework. Adding up the numbers puts approximately 22+28+26=76% of students in this category. These numbers have not
changed much over the years.
3) Interestingly, about the same percentage (between 22% and 28%) of seventeen year olds reported either not having any
homework or spending less than two hours per night on homework. These values also have not changed much over the years.
4) Also noteworthy is that about the same percentage (between 11% and 13%) of seventeen year olds reported spending
more than two hours per night on homework as reported not doing the homework. These values have not changed much over
the years either.
5) Consider that the number of homework hours in this study were those reported by the students, not actually observed
independently. So this is what the students reported their homework hours were, not necessarily what they actually were.
